Europe by train with one eSIM: Essentials, Europe or Europe Plus?

Planning a multi-country trip in Europe? How to choose between our three Europe plans, plus a classic two-week rail route.

Europe is made for multi-country trips: fast trains, short flights and borders you barely notice. Your data should cross them as easily as you do.

Choosing your Europe plan

  • Europe Essentials (33 countries): the EU favourites plus the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Turkey. Fixed-data plans valid for 30 days, good for a classic city-hopping trip.
  • Europe (41 countries): adds Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine and Moldova, with more plan sizes, including unlimited daily data.
  • Europe Plus (50 countries): the widest coverage of the three, adding the Caucasus and smaller places such as Andorra and the Faroe Islands.

Combining Europe with the United States? The Europe & USA eSIM covers both on one plan. Each plan page lists every country included, so check your full route before you buy.

A classic two-week rail route

Amsterdam → Brussels → Paris → Lyon → across the Alps to Milan → Florence → Rome. Most legs take under three hours by high-speed train; the Alpine crossing from Lyon to Milan is the long, scenic one. Book high-speed trains in advance for the best fares.

Tips for Europe

  • Rail tickets, transit apps, ride-hailing and contactless payments all work better with data. Load your ticket before you reach the platform; station Wi-Fi can be slow.
  • Signal can drop in long tunnels and remote mountain valleys. Download tickets and maps before you board.
  • Keep your home SIM active for bank texts, with data roaming off to avoid charges.

Check when your plan starts. Some plans start counting days when you install the eSIM, others when it first connects abroad. Each plan on Roamingly shows which. If yours starts on install, add it a day or two before you fly, not a week ahead.

Entry rules for visitors to Europe have been changing, including new digital border checks. Check the official EU and national government sites before you travel.

Setting up your eSIM before you fly

  1. Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
  2. Buy your plan. We email you a QR code; open it on a second screen (a laptop or tablet) or print it, so your phone can scan it.
  3. Install it over Wi-Fi: in your phone’s mobile data (or SIM) settings choose Add eSIM, then scan the QR code.
  4. Label it "Travel" and keep your home SIM on for calls and texts if you want them, with data roaming off.
  5. When you land, switch mobile data to the travel line and turn data roaming on for it.
